Renew, Reuse & Rebel – Lighting for the Circular Economy

With the Renewable Collection, Rebel Light offers something truly unique on the market: a complete range of luminaires designed for circularity. Each product comes with a 20-year service commitment, including warranty renewal and buy-back guarantees – all to ensure the product can be used throughout its full technical lifespan.

“When WE offer to maintain and restore value through warranty renewals and repairs, we create a unique offering for clients and users who’s into smart investments”

From Distributor to Service Partner

For a long time, Rickard Lundell, one of Rebel Light’s founders, felt the company’s impact in sustainability issues was limited. “Designers specify, manufacturers produce, and we move the box,” he would say. As a distributor, ”it was difficult to influence a product’s footprint before and after its use – but we found great opportunities for Rebel Light to extend the product’s in-use phase”.

In 2019, just before the pandemic, Rickard began exploring the potential of the circular economy – and quickly saw unique opportunities in lighting products. Luminaires are installed and often left untouched until, for various reasons, they’re removed. The materials are rarely even touched by a human hand. The issue is usually worn out electronics. But what if we could replace those – and let the rest live on?

That realization marked the beginning of a new direction: from selling products to offering lifecycle services.

“If we can ensure that a failed component doesn’t equals an unusable product, we can extend its lifespan dramatically.”

Building a Strategy That Lasts

Since then, Rebel Light has launched pilot projects, workshops, and deeper collaborations with organizations like RISE, Stena Circular Consulting, Cradlenet, 100-Gruppen, and Combient Pure. At the same time, the company’s CEO, Anton Sjöstrand, has contributed to developing a new global ISO standard for the circular economy through his work in the Swedish Institute for Standards (SIS) technical committee.

“We’ll keep turning over every stone,” says Anton, “to make sure our strategy is solid – not just for today, but for the long term. Longevity is absolutely essential in a circular offering.” While the focus on circular lighting may sound ambitious, Anton downplays the novelty and explains, “Rebel Light is really just adapting its business model to allow for systematic maintenance of electronics and lighting design – and we don’t have to make it more complicated than that.”

Want to Know More?

When the Renewable Collection launched in January 2022, it did so with a clear goal: to make Rebel Light the first in the world to offer complete and well-designed lighting solutions for a circular economy. By extending the service commitment to 20 years, and combining it with warranty renewals and buy-back options, Rebel Light enables luminaires to circulate – and thus retain their value for longer.

“Our biggest ecological footprint is in the hardware,” says Rickard. “So if we can create business models where products aren’t prematurely discarded but instead serviced, reused, and reintroduced to the market – then we’re making money in a sustainable fashion.”
